THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Consider Planned Giving as a way to help protect our natural areas for future generations—after all…forever is a long time.
Planned gifts left in a will, trust or other mechanism is another way to support NICHES Land Trust and our mission. Whichever mechanism you choose, a planned gift involves a benefit that shifts when the donor’s life ends. Most often, a gift moves to NICHES Land Trust, but there are a wide variety of planned giving options.
Gus Nyberg or Harry Potter from the NICHES Endowment Foundation can talk with you about your planned giving ideas and intentions, but you should also consult your legal and/or financial advisors before completing any planned gift document. Below we have summarized the more common methods used to meet your end-of-life gift decisions.
Gift by Will: A will is the most common form of planned giving, and can direct virtually any type of gift to NICHES upon the donor’s death. One benefit of a will is the cost of executing a will can be very low, and a close friend or family member can be appointed to carry out the bequest.
Life Insurance Policy: A donor may also name NICHES as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. One benefit is that payment does not have to go through probate.
Property Bequests: NICHES accepts bequests of property consisting of natural areas that are intended for use as a Preserve or other land intended for resale to benefit NICHES.
Retirement Plans: Gifts can be given from retirement accounts during member’s lifetime or NICHES can be listed as the beneficiary of the account.
Charitable Gift Annuities: Here, a donor transfers an asset to NICHES during their lifetime. Then NICHES pays the donor a fixed percentage during their lifetime and the remainder of the asset passes to NICHES. One benefit is that part of the initial transfer amount is tax deductible.
Deferred Payment Annuities: in this type of annuity, a member transfers an asset to NICHES, usually earlier in life. The annuity payments are withheld until the member is at least 50 years of age or until some set date after that point in life.
