This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit the Caretaker’s Cottage in West Lafayette to view the exhibition about the history of NICHES.
NICHES Land Trust believes in the power of carefully implemented prescribed fire as part of our integrated management to revive the health of our unique xeric natural areas in West-central Indiana.
Burn unit BR 4 located in the Black Rock area contains about 72 total acres that are part of our prescribed burn rotation. Of those acres, about 18 are owned by NICHES and the rest by our neighbors.
NICHES Land Trust and the West Lafayette Public Library are pleased to announce a new exhibit will be on view at the Caretaker’s Cottage West Lafayette History Center beginning March 21, 2025. The exhibit, entitled Stewards of the Land, was created in honor of NICHES’ 30th Anniversary, commemorating the work of the local conservationists who helped found the organization.
For 30 years, NICHES Land Trust has been dedicated to protecting, restoring, and sustaining land in Northern Indiana for the education, enjoyment, and appreciation of local communities.

Invasive species are non-native to the ecosystem in which they reside and are likely to cause harm to the environment or human health. These species have no natural predators or pathogens in their new environment, allowing for rapid growth and expansion, which can displace native species. Invasive species are typically, knowingly, or unknowingly, brought to a new environment via human transportation.
Looking for a job in land conservation, remediation, and maintenance? NICHES is thrilled to announce that we are hiring! We are looking for talented individuals to fill two positions:

As we enter the thick of the cold winter months, we encourage you to prioritize your personal wellbeing and mental health. This past Saturday, our quarterly Mindfulness Hike emphasized the importance of rest, reflected on our connection to the natural world, and explored restful poetry. A special thank you to our co-presenters from A Work in Progress Faith Community for providing thought-provoking and meaningful reflections.
